Hight Strength Clevis

Hight Strength Clevis

(OP)
I had to go to a high strength rod on a tension connection (A572 Grade 50) and now I'm having problems getting my clevis to work based on the Table 15-3 AISC clevis load values. Does anyone know of a manufacturer that makes compatible high strength clevis'? I don't want to have this 2" rod tie into a number 7 clevis that weighs 53lbs.

Thanks in advance.

You really didn’t give too much useful info. in describing your problem. All I could guess would be 50ksi in a 2" dia. rod, and something less than that depending on your thread selection. I don’t see any AISC clevis #7 weighting 53lbs. But, clevises and turnbuckles usually have a higher factor or safety than we work to for other structural elements, and you have to work this out in your design. Google “High strength clevis,” and talk to a few manufacturers.

dhengr....look at it as more of a question and less of a problem. I have googled high strength clevis' and talked to some manufacturers before making this post (I believe that is an obvious 1st step but thanks for pointing it out)....I was simply posting the question to see if anyone on engineering tips had some experience in clevis work with a manufacturer that I might not know about. The 53 lb weight is from a manufacturer's website. Have you worked with clevis' that have higher strengths than the published values in AISC?

RE: Hight Strength Clevis

Rods of that size normally have purpose designed connections, not something you buy off the shelf.

RE: Hight Strength Clevis

Check out Cleveland City Forge. They make our clevises and turnbuckles. We specify a 3.0 factor of safety above the capacity of an A572 Grade 50 rod so they should be able to come up with something that would work for you. This will NOT be the normal standard clevis per ASTM F1145 as those are woefully deficient in terms of capacity for this instance.
