FEA on a Bolted Joint

I have currently looking at performing FEA on a system that invloves is basically two peices of metal, that are bolted together in a circular array of 47 bolts.

Does anybody have any advice, web sites or references that may be of use please?

i am hoping to establish the effects on the bolts and the lower section when i load is applied to the upper section.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Before using FEA, I would recommend using dedicated fastened joint software that uses the VDI 2230 method.  One example is SR1, and more information is available at:

If you want to continue with FEA, SAE Technical Paper 2001-01-5585 could be useful.  It is titled Fasteners Modeling for MSC.Nastran Finite Element Analysis and was written by people from Boeing and MSC.Software Corporation.  You can obtain the paper here:
