i have sample of 1045 steel, through which i have to obtain a bainitic structure.my question is how could i able to do this without using salt bath?and what would be the soaking time for it after heating through the austenizing temperature?

RE: i have sample of 1045 steel,through

Correct me if I'm wrong but I wouldn't have thought it possible to obtain a fully bainitic structure from 1045 grade.

RE: i have sample of 1045 steel,through

You can austemper higher carbon steel grades, like 1045, provided the section thickness is below 3/16" because you need to hold temperature within the band needed to produce 100% bainite. YOU NEED A SALT BATH to cool and hold for austempering.

without an alloying addition it would be difficult make it possible but i have to make out of it whether it be dual or multi phase.

my sample thickness is 8.7mm i dont have sodium nitrate and nitride, could it be possible i would make it by isothermal annealing?

DrMetallurgy, in answer to your question,

no.

RE: i have sample of 1045 steel,through

In that case you would have ferrite pearlite and bainite with an interrupted quench

RE: i have sample of 1045 steel,through

You could do this without the salt bath, but you would need a molten lead bath.
Lead melts around 325C, just above the Ms temperature. Holding it in the molten lead bath for 15 minutes should be adequate, after which you could air cool. With a sample of that size, you should be able to quench the sample to below 500C before it started to transform. I'd be surprised if you achieved 100% banite, but you should be able to come close; you might find you formed some ferrite. Of course, you have the problems and issues of dealing with molten lead (getting some salt would be easier, in my opinion).

I am curious, though, what are you trying to accomplish?

thanks but is it possible making it by using 10%brine solution?

RE: i have sample of 1045 steel,through

Your purpose is not clearly stated. Are you compelled to use 1045 grade steel material and obtain bainitic structure. It would be simpler as suggested by others to move on to a higher harden ability alloy.
