Helping Using The Trimble S8 Total Station

Helping Using The Trimble S8 Total Station

Helping Using The Trimble S8 Total Station

(OP)
Hello all

I was wondering if someone could help guide me through the steps in setting up the Trimble S8 total Station.

I am trying to obtain X Y Z co-ordinates of a pavement. I would like to mount the prism onto a foot so that the prism is closer to the pavement thus increasing the accuracy. As shown in figure 1 (attached)

I would like to set up using a TBM of value 1000m

The distance from the centre line of the prism and the edge of the pavement (which the surface I wish to measure) is 165mm.

After setting up the instrument, levelling it and setting up a new job, I go to:-
measure >Station set up

and I get presented with the Corrections Menu shown in figure 2.

Is the Pressure (instrument) value currently set at 1013.00mbar automatically calculated or do I need to enter this value in?

Same question applies temperature? Also does the temp represent air temp?

What does PPM stand for and what does it do?

When I press Accept I get presented with the Station setup Menu shown in figure 3

At this point I enter the instrument point name, code and height.
After entering these details I want to amend the prism details so I press on the prism icon which then presents me with the option of Target 1 or Target DR.

Am I correct in thinking that Target 1 is the current Prism?

What does Target DR?

I select Target 1 ?.???m +10mm ID:1 as shown in the figure 4
I then get presented with the Target 1 menu as shown in figure 5.

On this screen what does Target Height mean? Is it the height of the prism in this case 165mm??

What does Track Mode mean, I get 3 options active, passive and semi active?

If I enter 0.165m (I converted 165mm in meters) and active and accept I return back to the Station Set Up menu. The only difference is that the details I entered for the prism are now shown on the right hand side of the screen next to the prism icon as shown in figure 6. ( I have also entered values for Instrument Point name, Code, and Height)

Where it states Key in instrument Point for easting Northing and Elevation, I have entered 1000m for each value, but what does these values represent? Doe they represent the postion of the instrument ????

What does control point mean?

When I press enter I move onto another Station Setup screen as shown in figure 7

On this screen I enter a back sight point name, in this case I have called it TBM and given is a code name TBM.

The back sight height is set to 0.165m (which is the value I entered in figure 5, but I was led to believe that a back sight is the first value from a known point i.e. from my instrument to my TBM. In normal levelling with an optic and staff man I set up my optic and take a back sight value from my TBM, I then add my TBM value (which could be anything) to my back sight to get my height of collimation.

What does the back sight height value represent and why is it set to 0.165m

I know this is a of questions but I really want to understand rather then just follow a set of instructions.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
