Mid-block Crossings
Mid-block Crossings
(OP)
I don't have a copy of the 2010HCM on hand, just the 2000. Can anyone tell me if 2010 added anything new regarding mid-block pedestrian crossings? I've come across some mention online that the FHWA does not recommend such crossings in some situations (>40mph, >15,000 ADT, etc), but I'm having trouble pinpointing the source.
Thx.
Thx.

RE: Mid-block Crossings
A seminal study by Dr. C. Zegeer and others found that on high volume, high speed multilane roads, marked uncontrolled sidewalks were associated with higher risks of pedestrian crashes, if additional measures were not taken. On two-lane roads and lower volume multilane roads, marked crosswalks had no statistically significant effect, positive or negative, on pedestrian safety.
Dr. Zegeer recommends median refuges, actuated beacons or signals, overhead signing, etc.

I hope this helps.
