Building Permiy and Other Permits

Building Permiy and Other Permits

(OP)
I am sitting in on meetings involving proposed interior renovations to an existing plaxe of worship built in 1965 in the City of Toronto. The proposed renovations include removal of non-structural masonry partitions in some locations, and the the construction of partitions with steel stud, plywood & covering drywall in other locations mainly to create classrooms; a small chapel; a washroom, soem admin offices; installation of a fie alarm system; and the like. The classroom area was classrooms in the original construction, but these were removred 25 years ago to create social hall; they are now making that area back into classrooms.

Questions:

- is a building permit required?
- if so, can work proceed if application has been made for a permit, but the permit not yet received?
- is a plumbing permit required?
- what other permits are required?
- what other authorities need to be notiifed? For exampkle, is there a municipal or provincial department of labour that should be notified?

RE: Building Permiy and Other Permits

Seems like you should speak with Toronto city officials. Unless someone here knows a lot about Toronto policy.

RE: Building Permiy and Other Permits

ajk1...as I recall from my former life, the City of Toronto is similar in its requirements to those of US cities regarding permits. Generally, alterations, repairs, modifications, additions, structural changes, non-structural changes, plumbing, electrical, etc......all need permits if above a certain $ value...usually pretty low like $500.

As JAE suggested, check here...City of Toronto Building Department
