thread799-181422: Defining Sections and Section Assignments for laminated composites

A frequent reader of this forum..but posting for the first time.

I have an issue with modeling a Composite I -beam girder of a bridge in Abaqus.

The I -beam is modeled with Conventional shell element. Please let me know if the element chosen is correct for an I -beam girder of a bridge.Secondly I have created regions of top flange, bottom flange and web.Top and bottom flange has say [+45/-45/0/-45/45] plies and web has say [=45/-45/0] plies.I create a shell section with each of these region for example :

*Shell Section, elset=_Topflange, composite
1., 3, Material-1, 45.
1., 3, Material-1, -45.
1., 3, Material-1, 0.
1., 3, Material-1, -45.
1., 3, Material-1, 45.

here the orientation of the ply material would be w.r.t to global coordinate?

Secondly how would i model a web since the Z direction is in the thickness direction.Any help on this would be appreciated
