Painting covering up hardmark

Painting covering up hardmark

Painting covering up hardmark

(OP)
Hi all,

The drawing calls up hardmarking the part number with ministress stamps. However we are finding the hardmark gets covered up when painting.

Anyone know how we can stop this happening? Only thing I can think of is using larger ministress stamps which punch deeper. Or using a marker pen to reinstate the part number after painting.

Any advice greatly recieved.

Rich

The part is a machined steel casting

RE: Painting covering up hardmark

How is it being painted? Can you limit the paint thickness there? Masking off the area? How about a machined part number? or an embossed label riveted on?

Thanks for the suggestions.

It is being sprayed:

Primer: 125microns thick
Finish: 125microns thick

Possibility could be to mask off the primed surface and not put the finish in that area. Its on an external face so want it to look presentable though.

We dont want to label at this level as we have a label on the top assy.

What would a machined part no involve? Is this vibro etch?

Cheers,

Rich

Is there an unpainted surface you could mark?

ink stamp the part number after painting..

RE: Painting covering up hardmark

Cast the part number in "proud" of the surrounding surface, in big enough characters so they don't get obscured by paint.

MintJulep, good idea unless the casting is used for more than one part.
