Fire Hose Reel Connection Methodology

Fire Hose Reel Connection Methodology

Fire Hose Reel Connection Methodology

(OP)
Hi Friends,

I am having a doubt in the connection methodology for 25mm Fire Hose Reels. As per NFPA 13 1" hose Reels are allowed to be connected from adjacent Sprinkler system (reference from NFPA 13 2007 clause 8.17.5 ) that means it doesn't have to obey the Standard rule of NFPA 14 and not needed to be connected from a standpipe.

Now the question is can I connect the Hose reels after the zone control valves or I must take the tapping before the zone control valve?

In case when the hose reel is used then also the normal alarm will ring. is this acceptable?

Please help me out on this... many thanks in advance.

RE: Fire Hose Reel Connection Methodology

Are you talking about the 1½" hose connections referenced in NFPA 13 for the storage areas? If so, there are 5 ways to supply them per NFPA 13:

(1) Outside hydrants
(2) A separate piping system for small hose connections
(3) Valved hose connections on sprinkler risers where such
connections are made upstream of all sprinkler control
valves
(4) Adjacent sprinkler systems
(5) In rack storage areas, the ceiling sprinkler system in the
same area (as long as in-rack sprinklers are provided in
the same area and are separately controlled)

These can be supplied by 1" piping for the verticals and for horizontal runs of up to 20'.

Hi Travis,

yes I am taking of the same.
but my question was:

  1. Now the question is can I connect the Hose reels after the zone control valves or I must take the tapping before the zone control valve?
  2. In case when the hose reel is used then also the normal alarm will ring. is this acceptable?
thanks

RE: Fire Hose Reel Connection Methodology

Since you can use option (4), then it would obviously be above the flow switch or alarm check valve. As such, you would get an alarm if the hose were opened.

I hope that helps.
