India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

(OP)
Story

Ignoring all of the technical details that will likely be wrong, 370 Million is a lot of people left in the dark.

Has there been a larger event in the world?

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

I stoped reading when it was talking about the electric engines coming to a stop. There are very few technical details to be seen yet.

We can speculate, but it seems they have a few problems.

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

So what did people in India (or elsewhere) do BEFORE the advent of widespread cheap electricity?

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

What are they doing NOW?

Another massive failure, this time twice as many people without power.

I wouldn't want to be grid administrator or operator in India today.

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

Wow! Over half a BILLION people without power! Including the capitol city, New Delhi. Can you imagine Washington DC without power? Wait..., that just might actually make it brighter!
Good day,

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

I heard, but not confirmed, that India had closed most of there coal fired plants, because of some green issue (I don't want to discuss green issues). Can any one confirm this? I won't say which radio commentor said that.

Can this be because of a lack of fuel deversity? Are we headed there?

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

Tech support said to try unplugging it and plugging it back in again.

Please note I do feel for their horrid situation.

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

I don't know about their diversity of energy sources but power cuts are very common in India so a lot of people have their own backup generation, even small shop owners. So the country probably isn't as shut down as you might imagine.

Energy theft is also a big issue in India not to mention aging infrastructure. I doubt the the US and UK are in as bad a shape as India, I hate to think what would happen if there was a countrywide blackout in the UK, anarchy probably.

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

Some speculation that India drank the coal plant de-commissioning Koolaid. Only spectulation at this point.

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

There were comments that some states were taking more than there share of the energy. Is this a way of saying goverment power dosen't work well?
Maybe they need smart grid to reduce energy usage. Or they need more wind generators.

I wonder how states are to reduce, or control there populations energy usage? Some sort of rationing.

RE: India - 370M INDIANS SWELTER IN HEAT AFTER POWER FAILS

Acording to an article from IEEE, the outage was caused because of a lack of rain, which has caused heavy pumping loads.

The Northern grid generation is composed of 28% hydroelectric some of which is not working because of lack of water.

@m3ntosan thank you for the story. Approx 6 weeks for a report. IIRC, it took several years for the August 2003 report to come out for the US.

I agree. After reading that report, I wonder if there is a good day to have that job.
