Reducing Export Size

Reducing Export Size

Reducing Export Size

(OP)
I'm trying to export an assembly as step203 or step214 and I end up getting a huge file. Is there a way to reduce the size of the exported model? The size should be about a quarter of what it is. Is there some useless data that is getting exported that I can choose not to export? Any help would be appreciated. I don't have licenses to "Simplify Assembly" or "Wrap Assembly"

Running NX7.5 and Teamcenter 8.

RE: Reducing Export Size

What do you need to export?
If you only need external data for placement in a higher level assembly, there are lots of tricks you can do.
1) Hide or remove hardware items that are not visible to the assembly exterior.
2) Hide or remove internal components.
3) Create an envelope part of the exterior.
4) Use refernce sets to turn parts off.
5) Use exploded assemblies Hide-In-View command to hide things.

I'm exporting an assembly with ~300-400 parts in it. I have hidden everything that I can and it is still too large. Is there some setting in the export that's causing the export file to be so big?

The size should be about a quarter of what it is.

Based on what?
What export options are you currently using?

RE: Reducing Export Size

(OP)
The reason behind me thinking the file size should be a quarter the size is based on previous assemblies that were very similar.

Exporting as STEP203, these are the options I chose in the command window, most of it is default:
Files tab:
Export from: displayed part
Data to export tab:
Entire part, solids
Advanced tab:
Long name
Colors and layers
B-spline tolerance 0.01

RE: Reducing Export Size

So do you have some of the parts hidden so that they don't export?

RE: Reducing Export Size

Are these prismatic parts or swoopy styled parts? That alone can make a difference in the amount of data needed by the export routine. 300 blocks and cylinders will be a smaller file than 300 formula one car front wing plates.

RE: Reducing Export Size

If I remember correctly, hiding solids won't prevent them from being exported if you are using the "entire part" option. Setting a component's reference set to "empty" may prevent it from being exported.

RE: Reducing Export Size

. . . and then when you have them hidden are you selecting by "selected objects" or "entire part" ?
