Creating 3D brain/skull model

Creating 3D brain/skull model

Creating 3D brain/skull model

(OP)
Hello,
I am working on a project that will require creation of a 3D model in Abaqus that has skull, dura mater, arachnoid layer, CSF, pia mater, all brain parts, etc. so that all different layers are represented. I have constructed a 2D cross-section from an MRI using photoshop, Algolabs raster to vector software, and movement through AutoCAD to convert the splines (that Abaqus couldn't read) to polylines (readable by Abaqus, but imported as points only without connections). This single cross-section took many hours due to touching of for R2V and then having to connect all my polyline points back together in Abaqus, then deleting individual lines to form sketches of different parts. I am sure there must be a faster way to do this and when I do 3D my current method will be unacceptable. I have seen other people on this site mention similar models and would like to know how they have generated such models. Any help at all will be immensely appreciated.

Thanks,
Seth

RE: Creating 3D brain/skull model

One simple option is to use SolidWorks only! If your license allows you to import 2D images in to SolidWorks, import 2D slices in to a bunch of planes. Make sure the size is appropriate (i.e., calibration). Then, create a loft! You have your solid geometry. Save it as a .step and import into Abaqus.

I fully agree with IceBreakerSours. Abaqus is not a good solid modeller. My only changes are in SWx try boundary or fill features over lofts and to save out as a *.SAT file for Abaqus since it is it's native kernel. I hope this helps.

Thank you Rob and IceBreakerSours, this sounds very helpful. I do not have all the images yet but when I do I will try this and get back to the forum on how it works.
