new interior metal stud walls; the partition types called for bracing diagonally every 4' OC (prototypes).
in richmond virgina they use slip track metal heads to attach walls to roof deck above....if the wall is extended all the way to the roof deck & attached with the slip track detail is the diagonal bracing still required by code?

RE: metal stud wall diagonal bracing requirements

Many owners will not allow attachments to their deck (could effect the roofing). If your owner allows this type of attachment, a slip track is a viable method of bracing the top of the wall. Watch your un-braced stud length. Often the architect will show the drywall stopping 6" above the ceiling. If that is the case- your stud is un-braced in it's weak axis above that point.

RE: metal stud wall diagonal bracing requirements

How is the diagonal bracing detailed? Is it used for in-plane shear forces? Note that horizontal bridging at 4'-0"OC is common on metal studs with cladding on one side only. The bridging prevents lateral torsional buckling of the studs.

it's for interior partitions only; no cladding just GWB; its prototype docs; the detail calls for studs to underside of deck AND diagonal bracing; not clear to me how the diagonal brace note got into the drawings & I never questioned it as it seemed to be a good conservative practice....
