what would be the base metal qualification criteria in this case

what would be the base metal qualification criteria in this case

what would be the base metal qualification criteria in this case

(OP)
In ASME VIII Div.1 It says in UW-42 that a butt welding procedure qualification in accordance with provision of section IX shall be perform for the thickness of weld metal deposited, prior to production welding.
We got a situation where we are going to perfrom a weld build up on a flange SA 350 GR LF2 25mm thk due to corrosion loss. we have a PQR for SA 350 LF2 but it is only qualified for the thickness range of 1.6 - 12.0 mm, maximum weld build up thickness will be 8mm. now deposited weld metal thickness is covered by this welding procedure but base metal is out.
My question is what would be the base metal qualification criteria in this case, according to the thickness of deposited weld metal? or as per original T?

RE: what would be the base metal qualification criteria in this case

Base metal thickness would be the base metal thickness T qualified with your WPS for a repair weld build-up, versus corrosion resistant weld overlay or hardfacing.

RE: what would be the base metal qualification criteria in this case

In the case stated, the minimum base metal thickness for groove weld qualification is 12.5 mm (1/2-inch). The deposited weld metal need only be 1/2 the thickness of the maximum required deposited weld metal. It is recommended that the deposited weld metal thickness be = to the base metal thickness to permit greater latitude of repair in the future.

Please see Section IX QW-202.3.
