welding/material compatibly CF8M - 316 SS

welding/material compatibly CF8M - 316 SS

(OP)
Hello all,

I have a valve which has been cast out of 316 Stainless steel, because it is cast it becomes A351-CF8M.

I need to connect to the valve with a pipe and Flange, but the materials I have for the pipe and flange are 316, will regular 316 be compatible with CF8M? ie can it be welded to it and would there be any issues from a metallurgists point of view?

Thanks in Advanced

Carlos

RE: welding/material compatibly CF8M - 316 SS

This should not be a problem for welding the above combination of 316 stainless steel products.

No preheat is required and keep the interpass temperature below 300 deg F. The filler metal should be 316.

RE: welding/material compatibly CF8M - 316 SS

Note that CF8M is NOT low carbon- CF3M is the low carbon equivalent. Your weld HAZ could be sensitized to aqueous corrosion due to precipitation of chrome carbide. But from a mechanical/strength perspective, the weld itself is no problem.

RE: welding/material compatibly CF8M - 316 SS

There should be no problem from your perspective. Are you not salvaging CF8M castings using 316 grade welding consumables? No preheat or post heat treatment is desired. If you can passivate them after machining,it would help.
