Coping the Beam Criteria

Coping the Beam Criteria

Coping the Beam Criteria

(OP)
Dear All,

We are using a plate grider of depth 1000mm for supporting a pressurized duct.

in site, we have problem that one of the piping coming on the way is calshing with the plate grider and we need to cut the plate grider to avoid it.

we thought of cutting plate grider to avoid the calsh and strength it locally to match the required section modulus and adding stiffeners.

But we want to cut around 600mm from the depth of plate grider, please advice whether is there any more checks to be done for coping so much depth in plate grider.

THANKS

RE: Coping the Beam Criteria

AISC Design Guide nº 2 covers the standing specs for this case.

I attach printout of a Mathcad 2000 Professional checks for all steel beams with round web openings; I am not sure if it was to the former edition of such guide or the tech info at one AISC Structural Journal article.

RE: Coping the Beam Criteria

Since you use the word "coping" if cutting some flange the info above quite likely won't suit your case. I will likely resource to one 3D FEM model in such case to ascertain the main stresses there with your arrangement.

RE: Coping the Beam Criteria

Provide a sketch showing the proposed cope. I would be reluctant to cope 600mm from a 1000mm girder, but if you are coping the end of the member, I see no reason why it could not be done with the proper reinforcement.

To cope in an area with high moment is another matter.
