UW-42

UW-42

In ASME VIII Div.1 It says in UW-42 that a butt welding procedure qualification in accordance with provision of section IX shall be perform for the thickness of weld metal deposited, prior to production welding.
We got a situation where we are going to perfrom a weld build up on a flange SA 350 GR LF2 25mm thk. we have a PQR for SA 350 LF2 but it is only qualified for the thickness range of 1.6 - 12.0 mm, maximum weld build up thickness will be 8mm. now deposited weld metal thickness is covered by this welding procedure but base metal is out.
Now my question is what would be the base metal qualification criteria in that, according to the thickness of weld metal? or as per original T?

RE: UW-42

ReTube,

Have you reviewed QW-202.3?

Yes I did but that does not answer the question I have asked. UW-42 pqr should qualify for deposited weld metal thickness only so for example according to QW-202.3 if I have to deposit 8mm thickness of weld metal why I could not qualify on a 8mm base metal thickness. Why do I have to qualify the complete base metal thickness of where the build up is going to be.
I think I need help with what would be the governing thickness here for qualification. in UW-40 (6) also say that for repairs the nominal thickness is the depth of repair weld.
