WF-WF lateral connection

WF-WF lateral connection

WF-WF lateral connection

(OP)
2 W18s, 2'-4" apart. I need to connect the two together to transfer shear from one to the other but the connection needs to allow for vertical movement.

I was thinking of using 2 bent plates, one welded to each WF. Then I would connect the legs of bent plates with A325-N bolts with one leg having a vertical slot allowing for movement. And this is where I have a concern as I am not sure that simply putting a vertical slot will allow for vertical movement. I am confused.

RE: WF-WF lateral connection

This is a little confusion. Allowing vertical movement and resisting a vertical shear load sounds like a contradiction.

RE: WF-WF lateral connection

Two parallel beams 2'-4" apart can be interconnected for vertical shear transfer only by putting a torsional moment in each beam. A slotted hole is out of the question.

The whole idea of transferring vertical shear in this situation seems wrong. Or are you talking about horizontal shear?

Perhaps a sketch would clarify what you are trying to accomplish.

RE: WF-WF lateral connection

Are you actually trying to describe resisting horizontal shear and allowing vertical movement?

RE: WF-WF lateral connection

(OP)
JAE, yes. Transferring lateral/horizontal force and allowing vertical movement. Sorry for the confusion.

RE: WF-WF lateral connection

Use a horizontal brace between the members, hinged at each end. No slotted holes required.
