Create spline doesn't create curve on current sketch plane...

Create spline doesn't create curve on current sketch plane...

(OP)
Hi,

I'm trying to create a curve from a set of 3D data points generated in Excel. I've done this successfully by creating a sketch then doing Insert->Curve->Spline->Through Points, but the resulting spline isn't on the same plane as the sketch. In fact splines created this way seem to always lie on the same plane irrespective of the plane of the sketch. Am I doing something stupid? Since I want to use this method to import several curves to create different extruded features I need to be able to control where the curve is created. Or is there some other way to achieve this?

I'm using NX 7.5.

Thanks,

Luke

If you're creating the spline thru points that's where the spline will be created THRU THE POINTS. If the Points do NOT lie on the Sketch plane neither will the Spine.

Sure, I realise that! Does NX treat the coordinates in the data file as global 3D coordinates? If so how can I accomplish what I want - generating a curve on an arbitrary plane and location using data generated by Excel? All I can think of is to do the transformation to the data before importing it, but that seems a bit laborious.

You could very easily do the transformation of the data after you import it. It sounds like you know the exact definition of the coordinate system you want the points to be relative to so simply create a coordinate system in that place and orientation and then bring the points in and do a csys to csys transformation from the absolute csys to your new csys.

You basically have two choices; create the 3D points and project them into the Sketch plane and then create you sketched=Spline, or create the 3D Spline thru the 3D points and then project the Spline into the Sketch.
