Drafting/Drawings Reference

Drafting/Drawings Reference

Drafting/Drawings Reference

(OP)
I am looking for a good reference (book or website) on proper drafting techniques for Machine Design. I am a relatively new Mechanical Engineer, and I am constantly stumbling when crating drawings. I eventually want to use GD&T callouts, but I want to be familiar with all callout symbols used in drawings. Basically I am looking for a good machinist/drafters guide to reading blueprint/drawings.

Thanks,

Jason

RE: Drafting/Drawings Reference

If you want the Standard behind the standard methods for dimensioning and tolerancing, see
http://www.draftingzone.com/shoppingzone/#DTH

for a publication explaining use of the American drafting standard: ASME Y14.5.

RE: Drafting/Drawings Reference

I would look up the Drawing Requirements Manual by Global Engineering.

http://global.ihs.com

and type in drawing requirements manual in the title search box.  This is a non-standard standard that should give you lots of information on drawings requirements.

RE: Drafting/Drawings Reference

What you need is "Engineering Drawing and Design"  by Cecil Jensen and Jay D. Helsel. This book covers basic drafting practices and Chapter 7 is dedicated to basic dimensioning including GD&T (basic). If you looking for a GD&T book without having to spend a lot of money, try "Fundamentals of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing"  by Alex Krulikowski. I can't say that this is the best book on this subject, but it is good enough for me.

Good reading,

Nonlinear Mind

RE: Drafting/Drawings Reference

See if you can get a copy of ASME Y14.5M
Also MIL-D-1000

This can be expensive but is the drafting standard bible

RE: Drafting/Drawings Reference

Your local public library (or better yet, the nearest university library) may have the ASME and MIL specs on CD-ROM and be willing to print them out for you.  Mine only charges five cents a page...
