Hello all,

I have an application that requires two components being joined together using a stud and nut, where other factors do not allow the use of a bolt. The plan is to thread studs into body number 1, drop component 2 over studs and secure with nuts/safety wire. Based on infrequency of component removal (not for several years), I do not expect the studs will ever need to be replaced, however one concern is that in the event of service, I would not want the thread locker to be compromised, and the component reassembled.

1) If the component is assembled with permanent grade thread locker, I would assume that the break away torque of the nut would be far below that required to unthread the fastener, but would the complete removal and reapplication of the preload compromise the thread locker?

2) From a production standpoint, it would be preferable to apply thread locker to all the studs, insert all the studs (no preload) into the body and then drop on and secure all components at a later time. Would this method present any problems?

I would appreciate any experience you guys may have!

Sounds fine.

is this a joint subjected to strictly static loading? Or, significant and varying loads?

I'd be cognizant of the delay that might occur between stud installation and nut torquing. If the loctite sets up when the stud is unloaded, the preload/clamping provided by nut tightening might change due to creep or otherwise effected by the Loctite's response to compression loading.
