Substitute for ASTM A148 steel

Substitute for ASTM A148 steel

Substitute for ASTM A148 steel

(OP)
Hello,

I am looking for a material substitute for ASTM A148 (130-115) cast steel for a prototype I will be building. I am not ready to invest for a casting quite yet and would like to know what is a good alternative to the original casting steel.

Thanks

RE: Substitute for ASTM A148 steel

To get useful answers it would help if you could explain:
Why should you look for a substitute and
Which properties are important to your project.

It seems that a wide selection is already available:
from the description of the ASTM A148 Spec one sees that:

This specification covers carbon steel, alloy steel, and martensitic stainless steel castings that are to be subjected to higher mechanical stresses than those covered in Specification A 27/A 27M.

1.2 Several grades of steel castings are covered, having the chemical composition and mechanical properties prescribed in Tables 1 and 2.

4340 steel in Q&T condition may be a choice. However, you need to factor that ASTM148 is a cast alloy specification and casting will have several structural inhomogeneities and coarse grains in comparison.

The reason I'm looking for a substitute is that I'd like to manufacture a prototype first and that will be in a CNC.

Yield stress and hardness are important.
