Protection CTs for Metering

Protection CTs for Metering

Protection CTs for Metering

(OP)
Greetings

We plan to pull out the metering data from protection relays on one of our project. Protection class CTs will be used as we need them for different protection function.

Can any advise if it is OK to get energy data (kVA, kW, KVAR) through protection relays when the input to the relays is Protection class CTs.

Thanks

RE: Protection CTs for Metering

This data is fine for SCADA or internal accounting/metering. It is probably not going to be acceptable for revenue/billing metering due to accuracy limitations of the relay's metering functions and the metering accuracy of the CTs.

The protection functions of the relay are not impacted one way or the other by your use of this data.

FWIW, we do this all the time for substation automation and SCADA.

RE: Protection CTs for Metering

Most metering data come from IED type protective relays and thus from protection IT's. Only revenue metering needs revenue class IT's.
