Arched shelf angle for masonry veneer
Arched shelf angle for masonry veneer
(OP)
I have a project using masonry veneer over a wood framed structure. There are two 8' garage doors over which the architect wants to have an exposed soldier course of bricks forming an arch. Does anyone have any experience or ideas for how to provide a shelf angle for such an application?
Thanks

If you have not enough brick width at the spring line as to feel safe of effectively containing the push of the arch, then you may provide just an arch soffit hanged from the roof. The hanged angles rotate, so you may need to stabilize them through inclined secondary members. If that is a problem, use a rectangular section, you may design it as a curved simply supported beam, if needed. In such case, check anyway the lateral displacement to see if that may still cause problems, out of confinement by the brick, or better, provide the necessary horizontal gap that ensures the beam action. Note that as a beam will have bigger deflection than the arch, so control the deflection to tolerable limits.
