Hi all,

AASHTO LRFD Specs indicate various Design Forces for Traffic Railings for TL-1, TL-2, TL-3 etc. in A13.2.

If you have a standard parapet attached to a wing wall, does the Transverse Force in Table A13.2-1 get transferred entirely to the wing wall? (assuming there is no moment slab.) Over what length can you assume this load is distributed? Would it just be from joint to joint of the wing wall?

AASHTO LFD used to allow a 10 kip force applied as a collision load, and now some of the larger Design Forces are 50 to 100 kips. Seems very large.

Seems to me like they are to different loading scenarios.

10kips is typical barriers loads and 50kips can be high-impact loads.

we design from joint to joint. How can it transfer if you dont have a way to transfer it?
