Thermal Barrier Coating and Iron Oxide
Thermal Barrier Coating and Iron Oxide
(OP)
In another thread there was a discussion about seeking an insulating layer between two metal objects through oxidation. But because oxidation does not lead to a stable equilibrium, the integrity of the substrate is jeopardized.
I am working with a process to apply an iron oxide-based thermal barrier coating over cast iron but am having difficulty with achieving an even layer. Someone suggested using oxidation to create that even layer as a "priming surface" for a thermal barrier coating.
Would that not, however, compromise the cast iron substrate?

You can Google "steam treating" to find potential vendors.
