Underground cable v/s overhead cable from transformer to service entrance

Underground cable v/s overhead cable from transformer to service entrance

Hello,

To feed 400A service from 50KVA transformer, is it a code requirement of any sort to have underground cable laid between the transformer and the main 400A disconnect or would over head cable also work?

What I wanted to inquire about is at what amperage/voltage it becomes a requirement or best practice to have underground cable v/s overhead cable between transformer and service entrance?

Thank you.

Tapan.

RE: Underground cable v/s overhead cable from transformer to service entrance

It is not a code requirement in the USA. Overhead services are very common. Where is the installation?

In the US the only requirement for UG service is if it is a local requirement. Some people don't want to see your powerlines.

Thank you for your responses.

jghrist/cranky108: The installation is in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada. So the Canadian Electrical Code would apply and because the CEC is more or less based on NEC, it may turn out that U/G cable may not be a requirement in Canada as well. However I'll verify if there is any provincial or municipal requirement.

My query is about if above a certain voltage/amperage would it be a good trade practice to have U/G cable rather than overhead cables?

Regards.
