Please help clarify the following from AWS D1.6 2007 Section 3.9.1

"In the event that base metals from two different base metal groups in Table 3.2 are to be joined, filler metal from the filler metal group in Table 3.3 corresponding to the lower strength of the two base metal groups in Table 3.2 shall be considered prequalified."

This section is being interpreted such that only the lower strength filler metal can be used to join two base metal groups. It appears that Table 3.3 is indicating that the higher strength filler metals can be used to join lower strength base metals.

It is not clear that...In the event that base metals from two different base metal groups in Table 3.2 are to be joined, filler metal from the filler metal group in Table 3.3 corresponding to the higher strength of the two base metal groups in Table 3.2 can also be considered prequalified.

Can group B filler metals be used to join group A and B base metals, and would this be considered prequalified?

Without resorting to researching the problem, based on the information you have provided, it appears that joints between two different groups is only prequalified if the lower strength filler metal is used.
