Jointed arms system design... opinions?

Jointed arms system design... opinions?

Jointed arms system design... opinions?

(OP)
I currently have a design to use to two jointed arms for a project I am involved in. The problem we are facing is that the 2 arms need to be set at a certain distance apart, but at the same time they need to be assembled and disassembled quickly when not in use. The idea I have come up to help solve this is to add to threaded extensions to the insides of the arms, where one is a right hand thread while the other is a left handed thread, and have a bar with threaded holes on each end. The bar will help set the required distance, while at the same time it will only take a quick turn of the rod to either adjust it to the set distance and to disassemble when needed.

I know the main issues will be to keep the same thread type on each extension, while also the threads need to be almost aligned with each other, male and female, in order for it to work properly. I would like to get any opinions about this before I take the design further

RE: Jointed arms system design... opinions?

i think the threaded rod is ok ... start with a single rod, turn a RH and LH thread. if th erod isn't perfectly straight, it'll still work, just take more effort !

or if you don't need adjustment, use a tube to space the two arms, have fittings at both ends that slide into the tube, and a cross bolt to retain them.

if you need adjustment, then add a turnbuckle fitting in the middle (or somewhere/anywhere).
