Application or ACAD 14 Utility to convert scanned images

Application or ACAD 14 Utility to convert scanned images

(OP)
Is there an application or ACAD 14 plugin/utility that will allow a user to scan in an image and then work with it? I need to scale that image (enlarge it) and then save or export it as .dwg files so a friend can use them to cut some templates on his CNC router.

Thanks -

RE: Application or ACAD 14 Utility to convert scanned images

Dear Rich;

Autodesk's CAD Overlay product was developed to do just this sort of thing, although I am not sure if it is still being sold. It is not the only product though, anyone who sells large format scanners will suggest appropiate software. The problem with software that converts tiff files to autocad linework is the quality of the scanned image. Dirt, paper imperfections and the like will show up as linework in your CAD file. You may have to spend a lot of time editing the file to clean it up. The easiest thing to do is import a tiff file (Scanned Image) directly into version 14 and then trace your linework over it. Afterwards you can delete the tiff image and be left with your linework. You may wish to get your local drafting equipment / printing supplier to give you a full size accurately scanned tiff file made with one of their fancy scanners.

Hope this helps

Adrian

Yes that's good info. I found one application called TracTrix that is supposed to do the raster to vector file conversion; however, as you state, whatever's on the drawing will be something in the file. Not sure if it's worth it - might be easier to do what you suggest.

RE: Application or ACAD 14 Utility to convert scanned images

There is a program BMP2DXF.EXE and an associated documentation file BMP2DXF.DOC that (in theory) produce a DXF file from a BMP file. The DXF file can then be imported into an AutoCad drawing.

I have both here. E-Mail me if you need any guidance.

Another option is to use "insert" from pull-down menu R14, and then choose "Raster Image". Once the image is brought in - you can draw over the top of it ..

Thanks Steve - found it. Will try later this week and or next week. If I need some pointers will let you know. Thanks again.

I have found Scan2CAD a very cost effective solution to converting scanned images into DXF files.
