Does anyone now the section properties for a 8B10? I am trying to verify an existing structure for new loading conditions. The design drawings show members 8B10. I was told this could be a previous label for W8x10. Is this true? I have also looked at AISC's Shapes database. I found several beams designated B10, but I'm not sure how to determine which one is an 8B10.

RE: AISC Shapes 8B10

I have a copy of the 6th edition of the AISC Manual of Steel Construction (1963) & it lists Miscellaneous Shapes (M) & Light Beams (B). The shape you asked about is basically an early W8x10 with some differences. I have scanned the relevant pages & attached them. As you may have guessed, the pages are yellowed & taped together so the scan is about as clear as I can get it.

ACE58 - Thank You very much.

I assume the 8x4B with a linear weight of 10plf would be the 8B10 I am looking for. This also seems to be very similar to a W8x10.

RE: AISC Shapes 8B10

Since the 8X4 B designation contained (3) different beams as a sub-category, they apparently dropped the "X4" & added the weight per ft. (10, 13 or 15) to differentiate which size was desired.

RE: AISC Shapes 8B10

Back then, we always used the weight instead of the width because of the rolling series' having more than one weight in the nominal size range.
