Hi there,

I am trying to simulate a stent crimping step in Abaqus explicit.

I have a metal alloy stent-ring and through a cylindrical surface I want to crimp it down. I meshed the surface with SFM3D4R elements and I apply uniform radial displacement on surface's nodes. I have constrained its nodes in z and theta direction. I have used a triangle node definition in the middle of the stent in order to constrain it in longitudinal and circumferential direction as well. I used general contact definition between the inner_surface of the surface (tube) and the outer surface of the stent. My contact property concerning the tangential behavior is frictionless and that of Normal Behavior is as "Hard" Contact.

Although, the surface is being deformed successfully, the stent-ring is not deforming. When the surface touches the stent, there are some stresses on it, however, the surface is like ignoring the stent.

Any suggestion on how I could solve this problem?

Thank you very much in advance..

Your material behaviour for the deforming surface may be too 'soft' or the section thickness assignment is too thin.

Thank you very much for your instant response. I shorted out. I used density value similar to that of the ring and now it works much better.
