Welding ASTM 500 rectangular
Welding ASTM 500 rectangular
(OP)
Hi all, thanks for taking the time to read this.
We are welding 150mm x 50mm rectangular tube steel together to form a box.
The wall thickness is 5mm. We weld them to form perpendicular intersections so we basically weld a fillet weld up the sides of the tube, then weld flat accross the part where the header and the long beam intersect.
I am still waiting for the company to buy AWS standards for me. In the meantime, could anyone help me with surface preparation like bevels, weld techniques, weld size, etc. I eventually want to make proper WPS but I need to start somewhere.
If anyone has any experience or advice it would be appreciated.

Buy AWS D1.1 Standard. It sounds like you might be trying to cut a fat hog by requesting information without purchase but I am giving you the benefit of doubt.
Here is the web site, you purchase AWS D1.1 in electronic format with a credit card and you can down load it in 5 minutes. This will also be a valuable reference document for future work.

Not sure if I get the fat hog comment but if it means free information- then yes, I am guilty. Thanks for your time.

Tell your company to purchase it or you can't do this work. Just like purchasing tools to perform a specific job.

Until now, welders have not even been cleaning the surface before welding, we are using MIG (MAG actually) and I know that proper surface penetration is important.
