PE Application Help

PE Application Help

(OP)
I failed the Structural PE Exam for the 3rd time 6 years ago(not good). I am ready now, after 6 yrs to go after the exam again. I might take Civil Exam instead. My question is does anyone know if FBPE will require more schooling or do I just fill out an "Initial Application"? I have e-mailed the Board but I have been miss informed in the past.

RE: PE Application Help

As far as I know, the SE license requirements do not require any more schooling than the PE requirements.

The SE just requires more experience, and only in the structural area, whereas the PE can use areas from all engineering disciplines of the Civil branch for the required experience.

I would call your state board though, and talk to your board secretary, not just email them.

RE: PE Application Help

Msquared, depends on the state. IL SE does require 9 more hours of advanced analysis and design to become licensed; you may or may not get that in undergrad. However, I think that is also a separate issue than if you have failed a number of times and are required to demonstrate effort or coursework to re-take the exam. I think that is also state specific too.

So, sorry, standard check with your Board answer applies........although I also feel your pain about Board mis-information sometimes. Get the answer in writing.

I would not fill out an "initial application" though; they catch you doing that and forget ever taking it again.

RE: PE Application Help

bgrantham...you asked specifically about the FBPE. Many people in this forum do not know what "FBPE" is. Since it is the "Florida Board of Professional Engineers", I'll take a shot!

As noted in FS 471.013, if you fail the exam three times, you must take additional college level courses before applying for the exam again. I believe you might fit into that category since Florida is a non-discipline licensing state. That means that it applies to you whether you take the SE or the PE exam.

You should read Chapter 471 of the Florida Statutes and the Florida Administrative Code 61G15 (Rules of the Board of Professional Engineers) before you apply and take the exam.
