Air Field Spall Material

Air Field Spall Material

Air Field Spall Material

(OP)
Lot of new and old product out there that is cost effective for spall repairs on airfields. Like to hear some feed back or suggestion of a good product to use on apron of airfield. Spall repairs will be 4" depth and under 2sf each. Air field is hard to get pcc patches to last due to construction practices and environment conditions along with cost. Any info is appreciated.

RE: Air Field Spall Material

Sika makes good repair products for concrete. My experience with them has been good.

Also, consider using steel fiber enhancement to your repairs. The US Navy did a study about 25 years ago showing much better performance out of fiber enhanced repairs using short steel fibers.

Ron: Like drilling and placing small deform bars in the bottom of the patches? We have done that in past but budgets make it hard to put to much in small repairs. Have used Sika stuff with good results, but have been away from that type of product and was just checking on what was new out there, Thanks for your reply Steve Byrd

RE: Air Field Spall Material

Steve...your client can cheapen the repairs; however, airfield pavements are always a concern with FOD (foreign object damage) to aircraft engines. Patches are especially vulnerable as they come loose and become FOD. Repairs to airfields are often more difficult than new construction.

True Ron: I have been doing airfield repairs for the past 24 years. Just seems today the young engineers lack experience in design or past work experience. They do not understand that a patch is just that , a patch. They are mystified that spall repairs done 12 years ago are failing. They want to saw cut full depth in 19" and 17" pcc and place a patch with NO dowels or any type of load transfer. They said we had to put a epoxy on the side of the patch to hold it in place. Plus they do not want a saw going past the patch outline, want to use a core drill to core the corners so the saw kerf will not be a problem. I have seen this type of stuff the past 5 or so years. You tell them something and they act like your trying to take advantage of them. Thanks for the reply.

Steve,
I've been around a few days, too! I see the same as you...a general lack of common sense and little understanding of how things actually work
