Laser pre-treatment instead of grit blasting prior to thermal spray coating

Laser pre-treatment instead of grit blasting prior to thermal spray coating

(OP)
Hello Colleagues,

In advance of a thermal spray coating process, a sand blasting
with abrasive grit material (e.g. corrundium) is required
to reach a sufficient bonding strength of the coating.

The grit blasting process leads to embedding of grit into the substrate as well as to small micro-cracks which could be detected by sectioning and subsequent microscopy.

In my case, embedding of contaminants should be avoided.

Does somebody know wheter it is possible to use a laser surface
process instead of grit blasting to increase the substrate surface area? My substrate does not form a passivation scale.

Thanks a lot
Feldmann

It may be possible to use a laser pretreatment. CleanLaser is one equipment provider for this.
