Is there a requirement for the number of man doors to be supplied for access into a room containing a MCC center ?

RE: Number of Man doors needed into a MCC room.

At least one....

I am sure everyone would agree to that educated answer, I am looking to see if anyone knows of a requirement to provide two (2) separate entrances to the room.

RE: Number of Man doors needed into a MCC room.

What is an MCC Center??

I prefer two doors to any sizable room - not closets - for example.

What if there is a fire right in front of the ONLY door out?? With two doors chances that both would be blocked are minimal - I would think - esp if they are nearly opposite each other. If that happens - the whole room is probably on fire already - and well - Good Luck!!

I also prefer two doors, But I am looking for a code stating how many access doors are required

RE: Number of Man doors needed into a MCC room.

NEC 110.26 (C) Two doors are required for rooms with switchboards/MCC/etc 1200 A or more and over 6 feet long. There is an exception if double the required working space is provided in front of the board.

Thanks dpc that is what I have been looking for.

RE: Number of Man doors needed into a MCC room.

@dpc, there is a grandfather clause with that correct? Do you know what year that requirement was added?

RE: Number of Man doors needed into a MCC room.

I'm late getting back to this, but everything in the NEC has a grandfather clause - nothing is retroactive.

That requirement has been in the NEC a long time. It's in the 1999 NEC. The basic requirement is in the 1978 NEC, except it adds the caveat "where reasonably practical". I think these weasel words were removed in the early 1980's.
