NFPA 664 - Wood Processing & wood working facilities

NFPA 664 - Wood Processing & wood working facilities

Hello everyone. I wanted to get some opinions on this. We have a wood working/metal working shop that is part of a much larger building. The total shop area is about 1600 ft^2.

According to NFPA 664 chapter 1, standard 664 only applies to shops over 5,000 ft^2. Does this mean that if the shop is less then 5000 ft^2 a dust collection system is not required at all? Or is this just saying that it doesen't have to comply with NFPA 664 if it is less than 5000 ft^2?

Thanks everyone.

RE: NFPA 664 - Wood Processing & wood working facilities

NFPA 664 applies to your building because its area is greater than 5,000 square feet. NFPA 664 is concerned with the accumulation of wood flour over a building area larger than 5,000 square feet. If your client can't control the hazard, then the potential for a dust explosion could possibly be created by your client.

You may read about this hazard in an article I wrote several years ago and I attached to this message. Good luck.
