Heres a question which has puzzled me for a while and I have been unable to get an answer.

In a former life I designed a lighting mast for export to an American firm. Presumably someone somewhere would have had to stamp the design before it was constructed. How would this work as I did the whole structural design? Bearing in mind being British and not chartered I wouldn't be authorised to do this 'in' the USA.

The company didn't win the contract in the end anyway but I don't see how it would have worked out according to my understanding of the rules. Would it just be a case of the American firm buying the mast as a product suitable for the job and therefore being exempt from needing stamping?

RE: Stamping designs not done by authorised persons.

The most common method is for the US engineer of record to review your design and modify as required to accept as his own. Most states in the US have a provision for this in their licensing laws and require that the engineer who accepts the design to validate the design by his own review and calculation as necessary.

...and ideally (legally) this would not just be a cursory "review" but taking the time to go through the necessary calculations to be able to seal/sign the work as your own.

RE: Stamping designs not done by authorised persons.

unlikely that a light pole would require a design by a registered engineer. the lighting plan and specs on the other hand would need to be sealed.

Thanks guys, thats put that one to rest. I guess that makes it fairly uneconomical to source certain items from abroad if you effectivly have to redo some of the work.

CVG - Thats what I thought initially, I was originally under the impression it just covered buildings and whole site plans but I had recieved drawings for manufacture of a tiny 3m pole with a stamp which led me to believe it covered most things under wind loading.

Ninja182: Especially when local laws are so different everywhere. Just in Los Angeles County, the smaller cities have their little differences. I can't believe all of the outsourcing emails I get that where their work looks like pure garbage.
