API 2000# Flange vs. ANSI 600# Flange

API 2000# Flange vs. ANSI 600# Flange

API 2000# Flange vs. ANSI 600# Flange

(OP)
Just thought I'd ask a quick question about a small discrepancy having to do with the bolt-up of an API 6A 2" 2000# flange with an ANSI B16.5 2" 600# flange.

I've taken it for granted in the past that the two mate up without issue. However, today a co-worker challenged me on it and stated that the bolt size required for each is slightly different. Sure enough, I went to my pipefitters handbook and the bolt size for the API flange is listed at 5/8" diameter whereas the ANSI flange has 3/4" diameter listed.

Anyone have any idea if this is an issue to be concerned about? Or can I just use the larger 3/4" bolt without issue?

Thanks,
OilsandsEng

RE: API 2000# Flange vs. ANSI 600# Flange

The 2-inch ANSI 600 flange calls for 0.75 inch bolthole, so getting a 3/4 inch bolt through might be a challenge. If it fits, it is no problem to use a heavier bolt than called for, but it doesn't have to fit.
