WHY DOES NACE MR0175 AVOID THE TERM "SOUR SERVICE"

WHY DOES NACE MR0175 AVOID THE TERM "SOUR SERVICE"

WHY DOES NACE MR0175 AVOID THE TERM "SOUR SERVICE"

(OP)
Hello All,

I have noticed that in reading through different specifications API has no qualms about using the term “Sour Service”. Likewise, it is a term that is used industry wide (oilfield) as an indicator that MR0175 should be consulted during the material selection process.

On the other hand, NACE MR0175 (current edition) is very careful in avoiding the use of this term. They are very careful to always say “H2S containing environments”, and nowhere in this spec have I seen them use "Sour Service".

Is this hair splitting, or is there a specific reason NACE avoids that terminology?

Best Regards,

VRF

Using Adobe word search, Part 2 has loads of hits on 'sour'.

valvesarefun,

My rules for a dumb question are:
Are you asking the question honestly to gain information you do not have?
Did you learn anything from the answer?

If the answer to both of these is "yes", then the question is certianly not dumb. Perhaps a bit embarassing if you think you should have been able to figured out the answer yourself, but not dumb.

Now, if you ask the same question in a Petroleum Engineering Forum to see if those guys know the answer, or just because you couldn't remember what SJones said (or just couldn't bother to look it up), well, that would be pretty dumb. But, I suspect you learned some very useful information, so you get a psss by me.
