No Compression Spring Elements

No Compression Spring Elements

No Compression Spring Elements

(OP)
Hi,

I am currently working on creating a finite element model of the cervical spine and in Abaqus I am trying to model the ligaments in that region using spring elements. Does anyone know how exactly, whether through the CAE or editing the input file itself, that I can create tension only spring elements? If so I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

RE: No Compression Spring Elements

I take it that you are more comfortable with CAE. If so, then CAE is just fine to create tension only springs.

Thank you for responding.

How exactly do I use CAE to create tension only springs? When I create the springs using the GUI there is no option to assign tension only, there's simply a space to enter a value for the stiffness of the spring.

RE: No Compression Spring Elements

Search the CAE help manual :)

RE: No Compression Spring Elements

Hello! CRAD3820 have you already created tension only springs in Abaqus? I'm with the same difficulty as you. How exactly do I use CAE to create tension only springs? I didn't find the answer in the CAE help manual.

Thank you very much for your help, I really need it.

RE: No Compression Spring Elements

Thank you IceBreakerSours!
I didn't find it. I don't have Abaqus help installed but even searching in the internet I can't find the solution. I'm asking because probably CRAD3820 has already done it. Am I right? Please if someone knows how to do it please help me.

My question is the same of CRAD3820: Does anyone know how exactly, whether through the CAE or editing the input file itself, that I can create tension only spring elements?

Thank you!!

RE: No Compression Spring Elements

Hi danielarodrigues,

you should use CONNECTOR UNIAXIAL BEHAVIOR. This capability is not available through Abaqus/CAE so you have to edit the .inp file. Moreover, this option is only available for Abaqus/EXPLICIT.

Try to search in Google, there are some inp's which you can use as example.

Kind regards,
Julio

RE: No Compression Spring Elements

I didn't want to give the answer away previously but since this thread is still alive, here's what you can do: Use truss elements and check the "no compression" flag in the elastic material property definition. Read the Analysis Manual to understand why this may cause problems later on.
