Hi
Anyone know of a cheap (free) software package that can reliably calculate volt drops, fault current etc in medium voltage systems?

Cutler Hammer had a graphics program that calculated fault current and voltage drop. It was not free however and I did not find it useful. Provided too many graphics errors and omissions. Cuttler Hammer is promoting a new program but do not know anything about it.
I suggest you look at MikeHolt.com for fault calculation and voltage drop spred sheet programs. These are probably in archives.

It has build in Canadian and USA ampacity tables, wire cross section data, Motor FLA data. It also shows the cost on energy lost due to the wire resistance, and helps select conduit size, all with one simple interface.
