ASME Coded Vessels with Swing Bolts
ASME Coded Vessels with Swing Bolts
(OP)
Does anyone know the correct method for the flange stress calculations for a ring flange which has an "O" ring groove in it. Note, the usual approach of making gasket factors "y" and "m" zero and then working out the flange moments is not entirely correct for this case (in my opinion) because the swing bolts do not pass through the ring flange (i.e. the ring flange is separate to the bolts and the ring flange is contained inside the bolt circle diameter).
see attached sketch.
Any opinions welcomed.

would help with the design?
RE: ASME Coded Vessels with Swing Bolts
I just had a quick look at Appendix Y and as far as I can see without reading through each part, this appendix applies to the situation where the bolts pass through the flange. In the situation I describe, the swing-bolts are separate to the ring flange. Maybe I am just not familiar with the code as some hence my reservation to spend a lot of effort attempting to apply a proposed solution as you suggest (and I thank you for your opinion) only to find it is not applicable to the problem at hand.
I invite further discussion.
RE: ASME Coded Vessels with Swing Bolts
Consider that your moment arms are calulated independent of the flange OD. Calculated stresses are then based on actual ID / OD. The fact that A is smaller than C will not (I believe) present any problem.
EXCEPT, if you are using canned software it may upchuck over A < C. In that case you'll have to work it by hand or with your own spreadsheet or some such.
