API5L or API2B

API5L or API2B

API5L or API2B

(OP)
I'm working on a project for a steel pipe structure and ordered A53 Grade B or API5L steel pipe of diameter 1 1/4". The company I'm ordering from only has API2B Steel piping. I'm unfamiliar with the differences in specs and standards between the two, will API2B be sufficient? How do the yield and tensile strengths differ? Please cite any sources or relevant charts/tables so I can show verification.

RE: API5L or API2B

Structural pipe spec is API 2B. Presumably, if you are doing structural work, you should have ordered 2B anyway. Why did you want to order plant pipe & pipeline pipe? Do you have internal pressure?

API 5L Material "Pipeline Pipe" is commonly available in various grades as follows (reference is the API 5L Specification itself),
API 5L Grade A has a yield stress of 30 ksi
API 5L Grade B has a yield stress of 35 ksi
API 5L Grade X42 has a yield of 42 ksi
Other common Grades are X52, X60, X65 ksi yields

What would you be doing, if you knew that you could not fail? Ans. Gov lobbyist.

RE: API5L or API2B

Common process piping is

ASTM A53
http://enterprise.astm.org/filtrexx40.cgi?+REDLINE_PAGES/A53A53M.htm

ASTM A106 B

As I alluded to before, all of these pipe and pipeline specs are especially used for containment of internal pressure at temperatures ranging from -20 F to 450 F.

Don't know about 2B, but I doubt that needs the internal pressure requirement, nor such a high temp range.

I don't understand why you ordered these for structural work as I imagine 2B is cheaper (but i really have no idea what 2B costs).

Thanks for the quick response-

There will be no internal pressure, it's a steel structure to be used on a highway.

I understand the specs for the API5L, they actually weren't too hard to find after a little research. However I can't find anything on properties of the API2B rolled pipe anywhere. I need to verify the strength of this pipe as compared with the API5L and make sure I'm not losing any strength.

The API2B pipe was rolled with ASTM A36/A709 plates, also.

According to you, it sounds like I should have started with API2B in the first place considering its primarily used for structures (off-shore structures from the research I've been able to find).

Just an update- It looks like the specs were included in a report and as you suspected they are sufficient. Thanks for your help!

RE: API5L or API2B

Yes. 2B is pipe for offshore platforms. I did a couple of structural modifications offshore with 2B, but that was back in 1988, so I've forgotten all details I ever knew about it. API are generally only specifying fabrication details, so the material itself conforms to an underlying ASTM plate spec.
