Rusted Ductile Iron Pipes

Rusted Ductile Iron Pipes

Rusted Ductile Iron Pipes

(OP)
Sir, hope you can help me.

What's the best approach to treat rusted ductile iron pipe?

I have attached a photo showing pipe current condition.

Many thanks.

RE: Rusted Ductile Iron Pipes

It would appear from your picture that you only have light surface rusting. is this inside a building?
It that is the case, wirebrushing or light sandblasting followed by a coating of your choice wuld be in order.
If it is outside, I would suggest sandblasting to remove old paint, checking for pitts in the surface, followed by a clear penetrating epoxy primer, then a 2 part polyurethane coating.

RE: Rusted Ductile Iron Pipes

Is this pipe actually under water sometimes?
If not then clean it and leave it bare.
If this gets submerged then you should blast and re-coat with a high quality product.

Yes, pipe is located inside a chamber exposed in an open environment.

Often times, the chamber is flooded due to groundwater ingress from chamber coverslab joints. (ie. poor water proofing)

Thank you for the advice.

You may also consider installing a sump pump and dehumidifier. If water free and low humidity, there will be no rusting.

What's the chain for? At first look, I took that for fairly severe corrosion of the flanged coupling, but as berkshire said, the corrosion is light.
