ASME Section IX

(OP)
Is there documentation that describes the method of assigning ranges for parameters (electrical and root opening, etc.) that are stated on WPSs qualified in accordance with ASME Section IX.  How are the ranges established?
Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

RE: ASME Section IX

The ranges for variables that are "non-essential" are decided upon by the manufacturer. The ranges for essential and supplementary  essential variables are based upon that value used in welding of the PQR and then applying the allowed ranges as indicated in ASME Sec IX.

The non-essential variables are up to the manufacturer but are required to be recorded on the WPS. In my experience these were established by the knowledge/experience of the contractor and their welders. Welders have a pretty good idea of what amperage range they can run a specific type of electrode at however the WPS doesn't have to be that detailed, it contains a range. Another source could be the manufacturer of the filler metal, various welding handbooks etc.

Remember, if you dont like the ranges you allowed on the WPS for Non-essential variables, you can revise the WPS without testing or write a whole new WPS.
