Type of Drive for Fire Pumps

Type of Drive for Fire Pumps

Type of Drive for Fire Pumps

(OP)
I have to design a fire pump for a demand of 300gpm @ 50psi. what is the type of drive I need to select for this pump. I have seen many times that electric driven pump and diesel engine pump along with jockey pump is used at a time. My next question is regarding the Fuel tank capacity and sizing. If at all I am using the fuel engine pump then what will be the Fuel tank capacity and how to size it?
Desperately waiting for your quick responses... Thanks

RE: Type of Drive for Fire Pumps

Generally one diesel and one electric fire pump. Local design standards will dictate the number of hours run for the fire pumps. Diesel should start first with electric as back up. NFPA code would be a good start if there are no local standards.

The insurance company or code may require the designer has x years experience; in which case you if you had this you would not be asking this question. The consequential damage costs far outweight the engineering cost so licensed fire systems designers do this work .

RE: Type of Drive for Fire Pumps

The building codes specify when fire pumps are required and how the fire pumps should be installed. You should start your search with the local building code official and fire department.

Can anyone help me with next part of my question... I want to know how to estimate the fuel tank capacity and sizing of the tank.

RE: Type of Drive for Fire Pumps

NFPA 20, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection requires a minimum of 1 gallon of fuel for each engine horsepower (HP). NFPA 20 also requires a 10-percent cushion above the 1 gallon per horsepower rule to accommodate fuel expansion within the tank, and sump accumulation below the tank discharge level.
