Field cutting welded WF Column bases

Field cutting welded WF Column bases

Field cutting welded WF Column bases

(OP)
Have steel structure WF18 column which looks rather field adjusted by addition of plate after plate welded continoulsy around to one another then to bottom. 4 columns per silo full weight 300T, use batch plant.

Can we successfully torch cut then grind for welding in new location, the base. Naturally prep would include grinding clean prior to cutting to obtain optimal cutting speed and lowest temperature.

Or is their a field saw like giant metal-devil that will accomplish this ?

What type of welds? Fillet welds can be arc gouged with minimal damage to the material. Groove welds may require cutting and repair.

RE: Field cutting welded WF Column bases

Most field modifications such as this will require more than one approach. A combination of arc gouging, die grinding and side grinding will probably be needed to remove the existing weld and properly prepare the joint for welding.

Be careful of several things....over gouging the base plate, possible lack of pre-qualified joint weld procedure on put-back, depending on geometry; field temperature conditions (will baseplate and concrete act as big heat sink?), accessibility for good welding, welder qualifications, etc.....

Don't forget to inspect during process and test after completion.

Please send a photo of the problem.

how are you going to handle the load while the column is being cut and rewelded? How many columns need to be fixed?
