Mirror Feature

Mirror Feature

Mirror Feature

(OP)
Hi all,

I have attached a prt with a failed mirror feature. I am just curious if I do sth wrong when trying to mirror that feature or is it that the feature conflicts because it consumes the face of the geometry?

Thank you in advance.

RE: Mirror Feature

These sorts of situations where there are in essence multiple tangencies being created, one from the first feature (the extrude) and then a second feature (the mirrored feature) can often be problematic. Now there are two approaches that I might have taken, one is to avoid the tangencies altogether and just create the faces using individual features (see my JRB-1 example attached below). The other approach is to have the system only deal with that tangency once by creating TWO tool bodies but using them both in the SAME boolean operation (see my JRB-2 example). In either case you you get the same result and while they both require what appears to be an extra feature, it's the 'internal' features which you don't see that are causing the issues here, so creating an extra explicit feature is a small price to pay. Besides, my JRB-1 example does not require the creation of any sketches so at the end of the day you would have probably saved some time as the workflow would have been a bit more efficient, meaning that you would have been more productive and it's productivity that pays the bills.

Anyway, take a look at my examples and let me know what you think.

Thank you John,

I see what you mean. I have had to deal with that in the past and probably will again in the future. I think I'll take your word and stick with approach 1.

Many thanks.

RE: Mirror Feature

I tried that. It has the same issues as Mirror Feature.

RE: Mirror Feature

John,
as you can see from the image that I attached, it's possible.
Try to add the planar face tangent to the blend.
Three faces selected to mirror.
Why with this extra face the command works, it's your next job...:-)))))[wink]

Thank you...

Using NX 8 and TC8.3

RE: Mirror Feature

Yep, that works, but it leaves a 'seam' down the middle of what are two circular faces, however it can be removed by performing an...

Insert -> Combine -> Join Face...

...operation.

As for my "next job"; I don't write this stuff, I break it!!! winky smile
